A Caribbean Photo Adventure
Well, that was fun!
I’m back from leading a week-long travel photography workshop to the Caribbean aboard Liberty of the Seas. Many thanks to Dancing Moon Travel for organizing a fantastic itinerary for the tour group!
We departed the port of Galveston, Texas and crossed the Gulf of Mexico for two days. At sea, we explored photo opportunities aboard the massive ship, and I offered classes on creative composition, long exposure, and HDR capture techniques.
Serenity from a long exposure swipe at sea
One of my favorite shots from at sea was this long-exposure swipe that created a wonderfully serene abstract image. Of course, there were lots of subjects on-board!

On the third day, we reached our first port of call, Roatan, Honduras. This rustic island offered us shots of fishing villages and rusty shipwrecks. It was an interesting experience for sure. I used my Nikon D750 and an infrared converted Fujifilm X-T1 as my primary cameras.

The next day, we arrived in Belize City, where we traveled inland by bus and then up river on a speedboat to the ancient Mayan city of Lamanai, which means “submerged crocodile.” There, we explored the temples and ruins in the HOT Yucatan jungle. I’m glad I brought my infrared camera, because it was perfect for this spot!

Our final port of call was Cozumel, Mexico. This island, known as a major dive spot, is also full of culture and nature. We visited a local market with our professional guide, and made a trip to the Punta Sur Eco park, where we found iguanas on the beach near the famous lighthouse Faro Celerain. We returned to town for a wonderful luncheon and then finished our day photographing architecture and people in the main square.

I’ve posted images from the trip at my 500px Gallery.
After a final day at sea which included image review and critique (it’s hard to pick out your three best shots), we arrived back in Galveston with lots of memories and some new friends. I’m already looking into booking a similar adventure for next year… be sure to bookmark my events page or join my newsletter to be the first to know!
